The Triops and The Meat Eater

Aunt Carrie and Uncle Ben gave Geddy a very cool birthday present: Grow your own prehistoric pets - Triops! (Kind of like Sea Monkeys, but cuter).
Geddy carefully placing the toy castle for the Triops to frolic in.
Geddy's pets! The triops on the left and "Snapper" his venus flytrap on the right.
So the Triops were not as successful as hoped for. We followed all directions and had four hatch within a few days. Only two actually grew and they were quite different from each other and extremely cool looking. However, they only lived about a week, not the 6-8 weeks the package proclaims. The second batch of egg mix we put in yielded no live creatures. So now we have let the water evaporate and will try again soon to see if there are any more viable eggs in the tank. We loved them the short time we had them. Geddy named the clear one Love and the bigger, orange one was Cute.
Snapper on the other hand is thriving. We have had him since the first of July. We catch a bug about every three weeks and feed it. Geddy helps keep him misted with distilled water. He is quickly outgrowing his little pot and we hope to replant him soon. Hopefully that won't kill him. We also have to prep him for his winter hibernation. Who knew that Venus flytraps hibernate in the winter and actually flower in the spring. We will see if we can get Snapper to do so. Geddy is excited because he is absolutely sure that no one else in his Kindergarten class will be bringing a plant on Pet Day!

I bet no one else will have a venus fly trap for Pet Day - very cool!! Elisha (Brian's niece) and her husband got Joshua Sea Monkeys one time...and Elisha "prepared" them...and boiled them all because she used too hot of water. Oh well...we had to have a funeral awhile back for a snail...joshua brought two home at the end of the year in may...I think the second one is still alive...I try not to look at the container. He should clean it or somethign before it freezes.
